When Gumbo rolled into town in the early 18th century, no one had any idea of just how iconic this delicious spicy stew would become. According to legend, African slaves started mixing cooked okra with rice in New Orleans in 1764 and in the process created the base of what we now know as Gumbo.
Today Gumbo is the official cuisine of the state of Louisiana with its very own celebratory day – 12 October. And how better to celebrate this than to sip on some of New Orleans classic thirst quenchers.
